As a model in 2025, what can you expect?

At Models Direct we specialise in placing everyday models in a wide range of very different assignments for our very varied clients.

This means we have a constant requirement for models of all types, ages, sizes, backgrounds and looks.

We need male models, female models, babies, teens and children – we even place model pets!

If you are considering modelling, then you must have at least an inkling that you will enjoy it.

Modelling with Models Direct might involve taking part in photo and film shoots or helping out at a promotional event.

We offer paid, part-time work that may be close to where our models live or could involve travelling (with expenses paid) to another location.

Our models have differing levels of availability and are therefore always free to turn down any assignment when they are offered it.

Equally, because it is our clients who make the final choice as to who they would like to employ, we are very transparent about the fact we are never able to guarantee work.

Here at Models Direct, we love to see the final images or video too – in fact, nothing gives us greater pleasure than seeing just how well our models did on an assignment with us.

This is why we always encourage our clients to send them through to us if at all possible.

When photos and film arrive with us we love to share them with our models or their parents.

And, of course, we also like to use them on our social media platforms and online on occasion as well.

It is important to us to celebrate the work our models have done and to give would-be models and clients a taste of the projects we are involved in.

We might use examples of photos or clips of films in our blogs and in the main body of our website so everyone can see just some of the results of modelling with us.

Unfortunately, however, not all clients are able to send final images or video through to us and while this is unfortunate it is not something that is within our control.

Sometimes we are able to track down the final images or footage ourselves, perhaps when it appears online or in a publication.

If one of our models has been employed for a major national campaign, for example, then we are likely to see it when it goes live.

Our models themselves might also be told by the client during the assignment when and how the images or footage from the booking will be used.

While at Models Direct we receive a steady stream of requests every day from clients seeking a wide range of models for all sorts of bookings, we can never predict who we may be asked for – or when.

As a fully vetted, government-registered employment agency, our job is also to actively seek work for those on our books – and this is what we do.

But whether a client has approached us about an assignment or we have sourced work for some of our models, the final choice as to who goes along to the booking is always made by our client.

So what can you do to improve your chances of being picked?

Well, to start with you have to be on our books in order to be put forward on any shortlist.

This means making the decision to join us and then waiting to see if any of our clients require someone like you.

If they do, then you will be in with a good chance of being selected by us and put forward to our clients.

Our clients examine the shortlist we provide them with and decide who they would like.

And if you are on that shortlist then, of course, you are in with a chance.

We have clients seeking all sorts of people from babes in arms up to mature models. They want male models, female models, child models, teen models and plus-size models.

They want models who look like everyday members of the public, as well as people who stand out because they have an unusual or interesting appearance.

We have models who join us and happen to be chosen within days and others who may have to wait weeks or months before being offered their first assignment.

Those who wish to further their chances even more can then ensure they keep their e-portfolio up to date with recent photography.

Models with a full, varied and recent collection of images not only showcase themselves well to us and our clients but also reveal how eager they are to work and attend assignments.

We can also rely on the fact that our models will still look as they do in their most recent photos and will not therefore disappoint the client if chosen.

Finally, we ask our models to make sure all their details are correct and up-to-date on their e-portfolios.

If you change your phone, you must give us your new number or we won’t be able to reach you.

If you are an adult and your body shape changes then we need your new measurements.

If you are the parent of a child model, then we need to know if your little one has shot up.

If we can see the parent of a junior model has not updated the e-portfolio for a time, we will be hesitant about putting that particular child forward for a job in case they no longer match requirements.

While waiting does require patience, it really is worth reading through all the reviews from our other models who waited a while before being selected.

And then to see that many of these models go on to be offered more and more assignments.

Models Direct offers part-time modelling work to those who want to be paid to have fun.

And it is certainly true to say that good things often come to those who wait!

“Image” is an accurate and memorably concise word ideally suited for our modelling magazine. It can mean a representation or a picture, as well as someone’s persona. It’s a true description of what is contained within its pages.

A person’s image is reflected more in their persona – that is, what someone wants other people to perceive them as. Most of us have an image, even if we don’t think we do. Many people have opinions of other’s looks (whether they choose to express them is their choice). Someone with daily unkempt hair and ragged clothes might be perceived as untidy and indifferent to their looks; this may be true, or it may be that the person doesn’t care what others think about them. It doesn’t mean that they don’t value themselves, but they’ve created their own personal image even without bothering to stop and think about it. Conversely, someone who spends a great deal of time making sure their appearance is immaculate could be perceived as either taking pride in their appearance or conceited. We shouldn’t judge people on appearances alone, but many of us do – it’s not right, but it’s true.

Image is important in modelling. But it’s not the only characteristic we look for. Our clients appreciate models have different images, but that’s only skin-deep. An image of a model is usually the first thing clients look for in a model’s portfolio, and it does go a long way to whether a model will be selected. However, it’s not the only factor and it’s not the be-all and end-all.

Consider the following:

1. A client will look at a model’s propensity to work well with other people: other models (if it’s a group booking) and the on-set crew, including photographers, make-up artists and people behind the scenes.

2. Enthusiasm and the willing to adapt to different assignments is equally as important as looks. A “can-do” attitude is something that can rarely be learnt. All our successful models display a personal drive that helps them progress in their careers.

3. Some assignments call for unique features that come across strongly on film or in photos. These features don’t have to be a model’s personal choice, such as striking tattoos or eye-catching body piercings. Milky skin, shapely legs or shiny hair are all bonuses. Whilst they may contribute to your overall image, they are usually innate (lucky you).

4. Some clients look for a willingness to travel.

So, it’d be wrong to suggest a model’s image is only what clients are looking for. Image is important – but that’s only half the truth. To be the best a model can be, you need to be strong-minded, enthusiastic, thick-skinned and sociable. When these characteristics gel together, you’ll be on your way to be a first-class Models Direct model.    

As you know, at Models Direct we love nothing more than seeing superb new photos uploaded on to your e-portfolio.

And we always suggest taking great new pictures that tie in with the season so they look fresh and up to date.

Summer, of course, is a fabulous time to do this because (on the whole!) the weather is better, the colours are more vivid and there are lots of great outdoor locations to choose from.

Female and male models should ask a friend or relative to help them out by stepping in to act as their photographer for a couple of hours. Then follow our top tips…

Mums and dads of baby and child models can, of course, take snaps of their little ones themselves.

So where could you go to get some stunning outdoor modelling shots this summer?

Well, you don’t have to venture too far unless you want to!

If you have a garden or outside space with some lovely greens and seasonal colour, then start there.

Otherwise, head off to your nearest park or public garden, where you could take some great photos in front of leafy trees and vibrant flowerbeds.

Think about whether you have a pretty woodland, lovely lake or picturesque river close by.

You could get some fantastic new pictures and perhaps have a picnic or a fun afternoon out at the same time.

Days out to the beach, countryside or other beauty spots can, of course, also make fabulous locations for summer photography.

Just try to ensure that no-one else is in the background and that you and whatever you are wearing stands out clearly against your scenic background.

Be wary of taking your pictures in bright, glaring sunlight – stand in the shade if the sunlight is too bright and always ensure the sun is behind the photographer.

Existing models can then head home afterwards, select the best pictures and upload them to their e-portfolio.
