In today’s reading we’re celebrating models with disabilities and how their game-changing perspective towards taking on new experiences and challenges with professionalism, ‘yes first’ mentality and ‘can do’ attitude is winning them the recognition they deserve in the modelling industry.

Bearing in mind, he has a disability that makes it hard to walk, he met his liaison this morning and it was plain sailing from there!! Whilst there are certain restrictions to high-end fashion modelling, the diversity in commercial modelling is evident. We do not specialise in any type of model. Commercial models encompass everyone, from toddlers to mature models, males and females from all backgrounds. The one attribute for commercial models is that they must be dedicated to their assignments, from regularly updating their portfolio photos to representing themselves (and us) on set. The rest usually takes care of itself.

Some people fare better in modelling jobs than others. Not everyone is suitable for all our jobs. Age and gender are key factors, but thankfully modelling experience is not required. That’s equally critical, as it shows that anyone with the desire to become a Models Direct model can succeed.

What’s also important is knowing the range of different types of models we’re always interested to hear from. Some agencies specialise in plus size modelling, while others mainly have females on their lists. Some will have more of an emphasis on pets.

We’ve provided our clients with hundreds of youngsters in exciting shoots (accompanied by their parents and guardians, naturally). Babies are usually classed as infants up to two years of age, child models are up to the age of twelve, and the age of teen models should be self-explanatory. The range of assignments on offer for children is limitless; all we ask is that they are well behaved and have fun in a safe environment.

Pet modelling – perennially popular with several clients, household animals of all shapes, sizes and breeds are always welcome!

Plus size modelling – for those with a fuller figure, there are many chances to be seen by our clients. For the past few years, we’ve experienced a surge in plus size modelling, so we welcome anyone to join us and have the best chance to be selected by top brands looking to appeal to the public.

That was the message that some of our male models helped to convey when they took part in a ground-breaking shoot in Southampton.

Alex, Muhammad, Lee and Renaldo were all chosen by our client ZoieLogic Dance Theatre to help promote their monumental dance event, the Big Movement.

The Southampton dance company’s aim is to empower, ignite purpose, fuel pride, and show that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things.

And via the Big Movement, where 800 men will dance through the city streets, the group wants to raise awareness about men’s mental health.

Alex, who has cerebral palsy, is one of our models who was put forward by us for the assignment and ultimately chosen by the client to take part in the promotional shoot.

Afterwards, he said:

“This time it was for a new men’s mental health campaign called the Big Movement. 

“The team at ZoiLlogic Dance Theatre was very welcoming explaining what was going to happen throughout the day. 

“Being a wheelchair user, I was very nervous but the atmosphere was very positive and uplifting and that gave me the confidence to be part of the shoot.”

Muhammad also enjoyed it. He said:

Promotional models

Promotional modelling is a live form of advertising and brand awareness. Our promotional models attend a specific event or location to help draw attention to a specific product or service. They might have to chat to members of the public, hand out leaflets and perhaps dress in a particular colour or branded outfit.

Fitting models

This is another form of live modelling – but without an audience! Fitting models are used by a clothing designer or manufacturer to check the sizes, shape and style of a garment. Fitting models have to try the item on and stand still while it is assessed and adjusted.

Fitness and sports models

Fitness modelling is where clients request a particularly sporty or fit-looking model who looks as though they may well indulge in the specific sport or form of exercise being promoted. These models may be modelling sportswear or equipment.

Bridal models

As we all know, weddings are big business these days and so Models Direct is frequently asked for models to pose as happy couples. Bridal models can be used to promote any products or services that might be associated with a wedding – and the photo or film shoot may well also involve other models who step into the role of other members of the wedding party.

Parts models

Parts models are male and female models who are employed for specific parts of their body – perhaps their hair, hands, feet or nails. They might have especially striking, attractive or unusual parts of the body that may be suitable for close-up photography. Follow our application image guidelines

When applying, you’ll need to add two profile images – without these, the application won’t be able to move forward to the next stage. Models Direct needs one headshot and one full-length body shot, that’s all. Both images need to be clear, basic shots captured in front of a white background, and in portrait format. The ideal height-width ratio needs to be 5:4. The same would apply to your baby, junior and pet! It might some time to get the perfect shots but it’ll be worth it and help the application process speed up.

To make your images glow up, you don’t need to wear heavy make-up or have your hair done professionally. On the contrary, they need to be as simple as possible with neutral-coloured clothes. Accessories such as jewellery, hats, scarves or bandanas aren’t needed to glow up your images.

Are you on socials?

If so, let our team know when you’ve sent your application over. When one of our modelling coordinators touches base with you, share your socials with them. You can also pop it into an email. We can take a look at your online presence and understand your visibility.

Do you have a website?

It’s not necessary to have one, but if you do have an online home to your profile pics, or things that interest you, please share it with us. This can add as a unique selling point, setting you apart from other models.
