social media – Models Direct https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk Models Direct modelling agency has been bringing models and clients together since 1990. Welcome to the Models Direct business blog. That’ll be the last pun we’ll use in this blog…

Reels are short film clips. They are usually entertaining, but can be equally educational, depending on what tickle’s the creator’s fancy. Models should consider reels as a vital tool in self-marketing. They can be used in conjunction with our new ePortfolios, so the scope for promoting yourself to wider audiences really is limitless. As long as models know that reels are beneficial to their own careers (and can be a hoot to star in and create), then it’s all good!

They are often considered a clone or spin-off from TikTok. The company Meta hit the headlines in 2021, when it changed its name from Facebook and acquired Instagram. So, for the purpose of this blog, we’ll show you how to create reels using Instagram as outlined by Meta’s official guidance.

We’re sure most of you are familiar with Instagram. However, it’s worth noting that Instagram Reels can only be done on certain phones (they should be easy to create on most of the up-to-date models of iPhone and Androids, although it may be impossible to get started on older models of phone). Such is life!

To get started

First off – what exactly can you expect from Instagram Reels on the Instagram app?

In short, Reels is a new video feature available on Instagram (hence the capital “R”). It allows users to record and edit short videos up to 60 seconds in the Instagram Camera (though as Reels will be continuingly developing, the duration will probably increase, and some users benefit from 90 second clips). Users can either add effects and music to their  reels, or use their own original audio.

Below are the easiest steps to follow to record a reel from the app, although sometimes the best form of attack is to experiment. Everyone’s different!

Note: Reels can be created directly from the Instagram Stories menu – positioned either between the default “Normal” mode and “Create” mode, or on the bottom menu next to “Story”. It might depend on your phone or app, but we’re sure you’ll get there without any trouble.

To proceed

Step 1. Tap the “plus sign” icon at the top. Alternatively, swipe right anywhere in the feed.

Step 2. Scroll to “Reels” at the bottom.

Step 3. Tap and hold the “Play” button (it’s the one with a right arrow). This allows you to record a clip. You can also tap it once to start, and again to finish recording. Top tip: you can also tap your camera roll in the bottom left to add a video from your camera roll.

Step 4. Tap the “watch” button (this is a black and white icon with a left arrow). If you’re happy with your recording, click on “Done” in the bottom right.

Step 5. If you have an Android phone, tap the black and white icon with a right arrow to add stickers, drawings or text to your recorded reel. Use the slider at the bottom. If you have an iPhone, click on “Preview”. See, it really does depend on the make of your phone!

Step 6. Tap “Share to”. Then tap “Cover” to change your cover photo and caption.

Step 7. If you want to share your reel to your story, tap “Stories”.

Step 8. Tap “Next”. Then tap “Share”.

The progress bar at the top shows how long you’ve recorded for.

It’ll probably be a little bit of trial-and-error for some of you, but with a little patience, it’ll be a piece of cake for most!

Reels should be the way forward for a lot of models. In no time at all, you’ll be reeling off clip after clip, promoting yourself even more to a wider audience!

Key traits to modelling success https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/key-traits-to-modelling-success/ Mon, 13 Sep 2021 10:07:44 +0000 https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/?p=1838 Success comes in many guises...

Success is also defined differently by different people. Ultimately, success is a good thing, and can sometimes take a great deal longer to achieve than first thought.

The word is best described as the completion or accomplishment of an aim or purpose. By this definition, everyone performs “mini successes” every day, no matter how trivial they might appear.

Let’s highlight a minor success – something that will ring true to many. If you have to wake up early in the morning for a particular reason, and you’re well known for sleeping in (damn that alarm clock!), it’d be a success if you do, in fact, awake from your slumber at that time. Job done! That’s a success.

Even crossing a road is a success if you achieve this without injury! If you think about it, the objective of crossing a road is to get from point A to point B without incident. There you go – another minor success!

How can you achieve success as a model? We’re not talking about methods by which an individual may taste success on international catwalks or have their name in lights in Leicester Square. One day, that might be the case. One day…

But for now, let’s concentrate on commercial models that can obtain well-paid jobs for numerous companies courtesy of established modelling agenciesModels Direct being a prime example, of course.

To succeed in the commercial modelling industry requires certain qualities. Some can be leant, some are instinctive – or at least need particular attributes.

The two important factors for commercial modelling success is determination and commitment.

Success in many walks of life is the result of not giving up and believing in one’s self. Everyone has at least one “knock back”, and it’s the tenacity of that person that usually determines ultimate success. The ability to “come back stronger” has seen many people achieve local, national and – it’s true! – global recognition as being at the top of their game. Would they’d have gotten there if they’d given up at the first hurdle? Of course not. Sure, luck plays a part in success, although sheer willpower always trumps fate. It’s the same with models! Be determined, always with the final goal in mind.

Knowledge and research plays a large part as well, because they can only add to an individual’s acumen – no matter what industry is being discussed. As a model, researching clients and locations is a large cog in the wheel of success. In this modern world, there’s no excuse not to be clued-up for assignments. Often, knowledge can be a game-changer!

An experienced model doesn’t stop learning. If you have numerous assignments under your belt, that’s fantastic. But never take anything for granted, and continue the desire to keep learning. Respect all contacts, because they are professionals and contacts are always useful.

If you are inexperienced and yearn to be a part of our wonderful industry, apply with us and we’ll see what you can offer. We don’t require our models to have had any prior experience; we love placing suitable people in great assignments, so if they’ve had zero experience, don’t let that put you off!

Oh, and who can forget confidence? No one likes arrogance. But there’s a difference between that and self-belief. Why would someone apply for a modelling position if they didn’t think they’d excel? Read more on confidence by clicking on the link: https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/growing-into-confidence/

To be successful as a model, you need to achieve your aims. If your aim is to work on one or two assignments, that’s great. However, you still need the determination to fulfil your goal, and the confidence to and knowledge to achieve it.

Thinking of more regular modelling assignments? Brilliant – but you still need the resolve and grit to succeed. We’re the leading modelling agency in the UK and we’re always on the lookout for new talent – but that doesn’t mean modelling work comes easily to every model.

Experience is great, but not essential. Determination is paramount. Confidence (not arrogance) goes a long way. Stick to these principles, and modelling could be a massive success for you!

Models Direct talk all things social… https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/models-direct-talk-all-things-social/ Mon, 08 Feb 2021 13:57:23 +0000 https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/?p=1667 Following our social media conversation

Who doesn’t love social media? We know it might not be everyone’s cup of tea but for those who are social media fans – influencers and followers – will know what great tools we now have at our very fingertips. The social media giants, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (and the many more adding to the mix), have changed our world, the way we interact with our devices and with each other. We’re able to do incredible things that we probably thought would only be possible in sci-fi movies and novels.

Social media marketing

Models Direct are using social media marketing so privide awesome content (just like our current blogs and posts) so that our readers and online modelling community are always engaged, up to date and in-the-know! Instgram paticuarly allows building brilliant brand awareness to reach clients and creative people across the UK and worldwide….pretty excioting, but it’s not just about pumping out regular content though.

At Models Direct, we want to know where our leads are being generated from, meaning we pay attention to what YOU’RE saying about us and where your interest lies in our modelling agency. This helps us to push self-promotion further, so we can connect to our audience even better. Our aim is to keep you hooked and create a reliable source of fresh, informative industry content.

Influencers igniting a spark

Influencers are hot off the press when it comes to brand promotion via social media. They’re selected to collaborate with as they already have a large social media following in place. This exposure helps spread the word of mouth and adds credibility when they promote the brand.

Models Direct understands the importance of having influencers on board and a part of the MD modelling family. We have influencers who have worked with us and our clients who have helped drive traffic and generate interest in our agency from a wider, initially untapped, audience.

Models Direct social media following

Our Instagram and Twitter following is buzzing as we’re loving uploading content daily. Models Direct’s social media presence is helping our prospective and existing models stay tuned to what we’re getting up to.

With recent figures indicating that we have 4,619 following us on Twitter, and 30K followers on Instagram, our modelling agency is leveraging high with our platforms pushing forward in this new digital age. We are current and aim to evolve with the digital changes and needs of our audience so that we stay ahead, keeping content real, quirky and fun whilst broadening our readers so that we reach out to more people.

Keeping it fresh with our blogs

Alongside the social media platforms we use, our lively blogs freshen up Models Direct’s pages with the latest assignments that our models have been selected for. We keep our blogs short and sweet, but include all the details and images our readers need to know about new photoshoots, bookings and assignments.

Despite our frequent use of social media and blogs, we do not use these platforms to showcase our models and promote them. Models on our books are put forward whenever a client’s brief matches their look – on the contrary, self-promotion isn’t required. Unlike some showcase agencies we have an experienced team of in-house booking agents who use their expertise to connect with casting agents, producers and companies around the world, building relationships, this is how they actively source assignments for our talent. Our platforms do include images, yes but only to illustrate the assignments and show our readers what our models get up to.

With the use of social media, we can get our information to reach a wider target audience. This is essential to the industry as everything is very visual with photographic, commercial and promotional work, and social media certainly helps to easily carry this message through.

Diversity in commercial modelling https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/diversity-in-commercial-modelling/ Wed, 18 Nov 2020 13:45:20 +0000 https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/?p=1568 A few years ago, the subject of diversity cropped up several times in the media. It was long overdue, for sure. Although it was well-received, we had to ask ourselves if more could be done to bring diversity into the spotlight. After all, we are all different, and no one should be ignored. Simply put, diversity should be regarded in the same way as any other genre of modelling.

Fortunately, diversity in commercial modelling has been on the increase. Companies now respect that models shouldn’t be packed into convenient categories, pigeon-holed in cute stereotypes. Take a model who is six feet in height without heels, has tanned skin and golden hair. Great! There is a need for this type of model in the industry – no question – and they should be encouraged to keep doing what they do best (we should know – we’ve placed many in top jobs for years). But the industry has shifted somewhat, and the need for diversity is perhaps two-fold:

1. To banish bias and prejudice, thus promoting tolerance and open-mindedness. Basically – for humane and moral reasons.

2. Marketing departments of companies (whether global, national or local) understand the importance of diversity, if only for profits. Without criticising companies for merely thinking about money (they all don’t, even though profits make or break them!), they’d be losing out if their products aren’t targeted to everyone. If there’s a need for merchandise for every type of consumer, companies don’t want to miss out on selling the products – that’s business, folks! Are CEOs forced to promote diversity? Probably not. It’s just unwise for a large business to ignore diversity. And that’s where commercial models come into a league of their own. Who better than diversity models to promote anything related to diversity?

Which brings us to posing the question: what are diversity models? It’s really quite simple! Models of diversity represent the breakdown of universally-perceived “normal” social barriers, thus including everyone from whole communities and demographics – regardless of sexual orientation, gender, ethnic backgrounds, religious beliefs, looks, size or disabilities. Everyone is different, so everyone should be included. Indeed, everyone has a unique set of talents, and these should be broadcasted to help achieve unreserved equality.

Commercial modelling is perhaps the genre where diversity has the most influence, because it is arguably seen by the most people. Every single person is a potential customer, so companies would be foolish not to tap into the diversity ethos.

Feedback from Holly’s assignment (pictured above):

“Holly really enjoyed her day having her photograph taken. She was made to feel the centre of attention which she loved, so would definitely like to do this sort of thing again.

Holly had to pose as a customer with her ‘mum’ and visit a car showroom to choose a new car. She enjoyed sitting in the car and pretending to drive. The day has boosted Holly’s confidence, as she just loves making people smile.

We’d definitely recommend doing this to anyone who asked, but you must be confident.  This is the first role Holly has had with Models Direct, and we hope it is the first of many more. This is something which holly could potentially consider as a career when she is older, if she decides to continue.”Holly’s Parent

Regarding advertising, diversity models can be utilised in various campaigns, and not just confined to fashion shoots. An example is our disabled model, Gary, who appeared in Kwik Fit’s short film promoting their “worry-free packages”, replacing wear-and-tear car parts, including tyres. As the UK’s leading fast-fit supplier of tyres, Kwik Fit saw the benefit of featuring Gary (who has a prosthetic leg) to illustrate how partial mobility shouldn’t be an obstacle. After filming, Gary stated, “As ever the day went very well and was quite seamless despite the very early start! The crew were very well organised and very welcoming, and it was once again a great insight into just how much effort and planning goes into such a short presentation“.

The final short film can be viewed by clicking on the link: https://www.weareiris.co.uk/kwikfit

Whether you’re a wheelchair user or living with a neurological / genetic disorder and you fancy modelling, we’d love to hear from you. Models from all backgrounds should get in touch with us, and together we can continue our mission to promote diversity to the masses! Join us by clicking here.

First call at the bar, please! https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/first-call-at-the-bar-please/ Mon, 29 Jun 2020 11:20:45 +0000 https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/?p=1456 With bars and pubs looking to open their doors again this weekend let’s refresh ourselves on a little pub etiquette…

Most of us will be well aware that the UK government have said that pubs and bars can re-open on 4th July while adhering to the new social distancing rules.

It’ll be a welcome relief, for sure, for both businesses and customers. The day is the first Saturday of the month, with the weather expected to be glorious (if May’s record is an indicator). So, after three-and-a-half months without a customary pub drink, the chances of a frenzied weekend for the hospitality industry are high.

In terms of workforce wanting to let their hair down, the modelling industry is no different to any other (except the modelling industry will have more stunning hair to let down!). We’ll all want to celebrate the ease of lockdown and the revival of the economy, but you may wish to ponder a few points before putting on your drinking shoes.

Firstly, spare a thought for the bar staff. By our reckoning, bar staff are some of the most important employees, and should be treated as such. A lot of staff may also be new, so be patient; even the most experienced bar staff can only serve one person at a time. Yes, there’ll be queues – but, come on, it’s not as if you won’t expect them. Don’t jostle to gain advantage ahead of your fellow drinkers. Be polite, as it may come in handy when you approach the bar for your second round. Also, ask for trays to help ease customer traffic, and write down your orders on paper if it’s a long list – it’ll help the bar staff. And don’t litter!

That takes care of etiquette. Let’s think about you – the customer. Follow these tips for a more successful and safer experience:

  • If the pub is not within walking distance, pre-order taxis. Imagine the waiting time for impromptu taxis – you’ll save time when calling in advance. And it might be cheaper!
  • Easy does it! Don’t go in “all guns blazing” and drink rapidly for the first couple of hours – as tempting as it is. Your day could go downhill very quickly…
  • Dilute with mixers. For wine drinkers, try spritzers. If you’re partial to spirits, ask for soft drink mixers to keep rehydrated. And don’t be shy to order a shandy!
  • Dehydration is a real concern, particularly in the heat. Opt for a seat underneath a parasol, and ask for a jug of water and plastic glasses.
  • Don’t forget sunglasses and sun cream.
  • If your town is as chaotic as you’d feared, consider going out on the next weekend. July 4th is not the only day beer gardens will be open.
  • Remembering to “social distance” will be tricky after a few units of alcohol. Tell your friends to remind anyone to keep within safe distances; the more people that do it, the easier it’ll be.
  • Try to cool down before going to bed, and drink a pint of water.

So, to re-cap:

Do:

  • Put yourself in the bar staff’s shoes.
  • Seek shelter in beer gardens.
  • Use trays.
  • Use contactless payments.
  • Dilute drinks.
  • Social distance.

Don’t:

  • Forget your sun cream and sunglasses.
  • Drink too quickly like you’ve forgotten how to.
  • Be tempted to hug all your friends – this could test your willpower to the max.

However you choose to recognise this significant progress in moving forward from lockdown, remember to stay safe, be kind and have consideration for others…

Models Direct continues to thrive, placing the best models in the most interesting jobs across the country. Please get in touch with us if you need any information about the modelling industry. in the meantime, we wish everyone a happy, hot, and successful summer!

Elle started her modelling career at 16, has been on the Models Direct books for 5 years and has a wealth of modelling experience to share with you…

Elle Harris Modelling Blog & Model with Models Direct.

How did I get into it?
Is probably the biggest question I’m always asked! And also the question I wanted to know before modelling myself!

Well…unfortunately you don’t often just ‘fall into it’, ‘get lucky’ or ‘get spotted’ very often nowadays. There was a time when models were spotted on beaches abroad but now if it’s something you want to work towards you’ve really got to put some graft in yourself – just like you would with anything else! Competition in the creative industry is bigger than ever before and with the use of social media, particularly huge followings on Instagram is where the most successful models are gaining their opportunities and clients. However, it’s still possible to build it and be successful without that and work you’re way to the top.

First things first ….So how do I get started?

MY TOP 3

  1. You’ll need images! Some might say, you’re hair needs to be done, you need to loose weight, you need to build confidence, you need to wait until your skin’s better. Nope. I wouldn’t listen to these people! None of those listed things will ever be ‘right’ and if you’re doubting confidence, try not to just go for it! The modelling world has this perception of judgement and perfection -yes, but from all the years modelling I have hardly come across any rude , judgmental or awkward situations, everyone has been lovely! Have faith in people – you need to have confidence to a specific level to model so try and believe in yourself or if not it may not be for you.

Having images to start with will give you experience. This can be done by testing with photographers or maybe even friends! Allowing you to know how a camera works and build confidence even more. It is also a way of getting free images to build a portfolio, which is key to send to an agency to help you on your way. Get creative too with clothes, styling and do you’re own makeup! I will still test shoot to build my portfolio as it’s always good to be updated. Like any business with their website, your portfolio is your business website.

2. Understanding What you’re suited too!

It’s important to know exactly where you think you will fit in within the modelling industry. Google can help too! If you’re not sure you may need to ask yourself these few things too.  There’s something for everyone (see my modelling can be for anyone and everyone below).  So..

  • Are you tall? 5ft 8 +: Catwalk high fashion
  • Are you more curvy, everyday commercial?: ME. Covering beauty, real life, commercial advertising and curvy fashion
  • Plus size /curvy?: plus size brands, everyday and real life
  • In good shape, muscular, body building?: fitness modelling/sports

These are just a few examples there are so many more modelling categories you may be suitable for. Whatever makes you unique, is a talent or defines you for YOU then put that forward. There is no point however being unrealistic, I am 5ft 6 so high fashion and catwalk is not for me!
You may be more than one of these things too!

3. An Agency? Why..?

You’ll need an agency! Yes you can go at it self employed as well as being agency signed (non exclusive of course) you’re entitled to do so. So long as your very upfront and honest with you’re agents about the other work you do they will completely understand and respect that.

But an agency will always find you those bigger jobs, high end clients and well established brands. If you think of it on a business perspective they want to know a model is suited for exactly what they need and will be able to ask the agent these questions, see a series of images and know that they are professional and well managed models to work with.

Models direct

Models Direct are an all round non exclusive agency with the most reputable manner, professionalism and clients for you. Ensuring you are safe, looked after and represented the best you can be! I have been with them for over 5 years now and will always recommend them as my No.1 agency for all round modelling work. Keep in the loop, keep interested, proactive and available for as many assignments as possible and you will be well on your way!

Click here to apply to Models Direct

Remember! Modelling can be for anyone and everyone

Anyone can model. Any look, shape and size. There are always people needed to advertise promote and represent every single brand there is out there in the world! It’s just whether it will suit and fit you or not.  It’s such a shame that social media has this pressured and false sense of perfection, perfect figure, beautiful makeup and perfect clothes for imagery. Yes its a HUGE part of the modelling world but it’s certainly not the only aspect. Talking from experience myself some of the best, well paid, fun and down to earth modelling jobs I have done have been for corporate businesses, the NHS and real looks for commercial brands. Not all skinny and glam at all!

Please check out my website- elleharris.co.uk to see the brands and clients I have worked with as well as a little more about myself. You can also find me on instagram @Elleharris8 for more updates, blogs and info pop me a DM I’m happy to help!

Best of luck & just go for it!

Model Family Secure Dream Assignment https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/model-family-secure-dream-assignment/ Tue, 30 Jul 2019 08:30:10 +0000 http://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/?p=1112 A 4 day, all expenses paid trip to a stunning chateau in the South of France with your beauiful family to shoot a new commercial is something most of us can only dream of, but for this lucky model family that dream became a reality!

The Models Direct bookings team were contacted by production agency, The Gate Films, who were looking to source a ‘real’ model family to feature in a commercial for an incredible new luxury chateau by travel company Oliver Travels. The family were to experince the amazing service and accomodation this Chateau and travel company offers. The MD team were delighted to be able to put a selection of our model families forward for the client’s consideration and of course to be able to offer this once in a lifetime opportunity to The Golding Family was fantastic!

Coral and her family have done several assignments with Models Direct and are experienced in the modelling and social media industry, so we knew they would be perfect for such an exciting job.

Coral and her family flew from Gatwick and were transported to the Chateau which was a total surprise! The production team were already at the Chateau and the large team started four days of filming with the family.

Size Doesn’t Matter After All https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/size-doesnt-matter/ Thu, 07 Feb 2019 13:32:27 +0000 http://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/?p=942 With such a huge focus on healthy living across the media it is surprising to learn our waistlines are getting bigger and that the plus size clothing market is worth approximately £5 billion and continuously growing…is it any wonder brands are desperately seeking the next top plus size model?!

Plus size modelling is a contentious subject in the media, with brands being slammed for using plus size models in their marketing campaigns and consequently then promoting an unhealthy lifestyle or brands using size 6-8 models and therefore not appealing to the majority – so how can these fashion houses get it right??

Models Direct is the UK’s number one commercial modelling and talent agency. We have a more varied demand from our clients for the types of models and talent we represent and have done since 1990 when the agency was created, this is why ‘size’ is literally just a number for us!

With big name high street brands like ASOS, BooHoo, River Island and Marks & Spencer using plus size models to promote their clothes the demand for plus size models is big.  Now you can use your size to your advantage which wasn’t the case historically in the modelling industry.

Brands pay big money with us for the right plus size model to promote their garments. Some of the top curve models are able to earn up to £20,000 per day!

Models Direct has always represented plus-size models. Average female in the UK is a size 16, so a plus size model can vary from a size 12 upwards. Recently Models Direct has seen a rise in demand for models size 16 and above.

Models Direct currently has 5 plus size models selected for a Very Curve casting – let’s wish them good luck.

Here’s Lisa she had this to say:

“I just wanted to say such a huge thank you to Models Direct!!
I went on my first photo shoot 2 years ago because I was struggling with body confidence, ( I had a breast reduction planned and a huge weight loss dream) the reduction I had but the weight loss didn’t happen as I became quite poorly.
I never planned to sign up to a model agency, it was just to help me feel better and it really did.
So in all honesty I half heartedly filled out my account and never looked at it again and my photos I kept hidden behind my sofa never to be seen by anyone !
It’s really funny because over Xmas we were moving furniture my mum and sisters found the folder and we all sat there laughing at them at how huge I looked ! I was mortified by them and embarrassed .
When you called me I literally thought it was a joke! I thought maybe it’s an open audition and it’s what the agency do before your account runs out – I hadn’t even thought for one second my account was really live.
I spent the morning of the casting writing a blog about self confidence and used the experience as a challenge about facing demons head on, it took me right back to my dancing days (which is another lifetime ago!) when I was always told great dancer but you won’t fit in the costume at all my auditions soul destroying as back then I was only a size 10 but just had these huge boobs that made me look a 16+
To have you call me yesterday with the great news was mind blowing, I’m literally blown away it was so unexpected and I’m so over the moon to just have had that phone call, it was so unexpected !
Fingers crossed for Monday it will either be something to scream about or write about either way
I’m happy with both options
Thank you again for taking the time to call me on your day off it was really appreciated
Lisa x “
