Yup, we were not kidding when we said we’d answer it like that. No one has time to read through lots of content and we appreciate that because everything is whizzing past super quick, we’ll get straight to the crunch here.

Modelling isn’t as rigid as it used to be. If a model’s height is below what one would think was average, or equally above, it isn’t scrutinised and then made into an issue whereby perhaps the prospect of withdrawing an application is hinted or considered.

However, there might be some height guidelines depending on which modelling category you’re looking to work in. If the matter of height does concern you, please read on:

Catwalk modelling

Those models you see donning the runway do have more height and body measurement expectations than other areas of modelling. You will generally expect to see super slim and super tall models walking the length of the runway and back, although the catwalk landscape is pushing for more diversity and inclusivity with models such as hijab-wearing Halima Aden, Naadirah Qazi and Megumi Soyer-Shima who are making waves.

Height requirement:

Women – between 5’8” and 5’11” with a 6-8 dress size and a 34″-24″-34″ bust, waist and hip measurement.

Men – around 6’0” to 6’2”.

Commercial modelling

This modelling division looks for relatable models who will appeal to a target audience which means that the height requirement is much more relaxed than for runway models. It’s all about everyday people connecting with models they can relate to and see their reflection in including models’ appearance as well as their height.

Height requirements:

Depends on what a company desires but it varies from one brand to the next.

Petite modelling

Many females, for example, fall under 5’7” making them the ideal height for petite modelling. Whether it’s for catalogue modelling, commercial modelling or promotional work, petite models are being included in the modelling industry and not being scrutinised for their height. On the contrary, they’re celebrated and embraced for their petite stature and will appeal to everyday people who are also petite.

Height requirement:

Women – under 5’7”

Plus-size modelling

The dress size which best represents this modelling niche varies from one brand to the next but generally speaking, it’s over size 16. Any model which fits in a dress size above this is plus-size although a lot of people are calling for this category to be scrapped so that body size is a more encompassing topic rather than labelling everyone. Hey, some people might not want to be put into a plus-size box and are most certainly entitled to that.

Height on the other hand for plus-size models does not follow a strict guideline.

Height requirement:

Depends on what a company desires but it varies from one brand to the next.

Other modelling niches include fitness/sports modelling, body parts modelling, and disabled modelling. Each brings its own magic and doesn’t meet typical modelling standard requirements so height diversity can enjoy the limelight without the pressure.

Modelling in London

We’re fortunate to give models of all ages and backgrounds the chance to put their skills to good use all over the UK – and even abroad. We know that there are many brands looking to reach audiences and new customers wherever they’re based. The aim of using our commercial models is to present a captivating marketing photo shoot or film to appeal to those that might use the brand’s products or services. Using models is as effective as ever.   

But there’s something a little bit special about modelling in London. An obvious advantage is that many of successful brands are based in our capital. London is only one of two Alpha ++ cities in the world, meaning it’s at the top of the tree for decision-making power, innovation, financial institutes, media and communications, and education / research. Suitability for commercial modelling encompasses everyone from any background and experience. Consider the following models our clients regularly ask us to provide them:

Although we’ll provide all the essential information and be available to answer queries ahead of a shoot, models need to be well prepared to make their modelling life that little bit easier. Preparation is key, and shouldn’t be underestimated.

Remaining calm, professional and confident are also key qualities for all our commercial models. If you thrive by taking directions from someone in a professional environment, whilst having fun and keeping to professional levels, you’ll fit in nicely with our extensive list of models.

Nerves are normal. Being filmed or photographed is not everyone’s ideal job, but for our models it’s perfect. Our clients know that everyone involved in the assignment must work together to produce the desired result, and so our models constantly tell us how relaxed everyone is on set, and how much relaxed they are made to feel.

Simone’s feedback for her second assignment with us is a perfect example. She said, “I had a great experience at my shoot at Leeds University. It was an amazing opportunity to get to go to a new city and the other models were very friendly, which calmed my nerves and made the experience more enjoyable. Like we say, the previous years (decades, even) have seen substantial growth for us. We work with far more clients year-on-year, and we are able to offer more wonderful modelling assignments to our registered models. We don’t really need to advertise to big name brands, because they come to us whenever they require models to help them in their marketing campaigns and in their advertising needs. We’ve built up an incomparable reputation and our clients trust us to meet their needs. It’s a great two-way relationship.

As a model in 2025, what can you expect?

If you’re thinking about modelling for the first time with us, you should know that you’re in the best possible position to be put forward to our clients. The brands we work range from multinationals and high street retailers to smaller start-ups. If models don’t help themselves, the chances of being chosen by our clients are dramatically reduced. If a model hasn’t been offered a modelling assignment for some time, it could be that their portfolio looks tired, stale and outdated. Also, it could also be the case that we’ve tried to contact a model, only to find that they’ve changed email address and mobile numbers – both scenarios defeat the object of being available for work. Help yourselves by helping us, which in turn helps our clients when they come to making decisions about which models they’d prefer to appear in their modelling campaigns.   

As a government-regulated modelling employment agency in the UK, our team of professionals are experts at presenting the right models to our clients. We’ve been doing this for three decades, so the brands that rely on us have total faith in our judgement. After we’ve read the modelling briefs, we shortlisted a group of registered models and contact the client. They can then peruse a model’s portfolio and decide which models they’d like to work with them. We’ll then get in touch with the successful models and offer them the assignment.

Models will know if they’ve been booked for a job when we contact them with the good news that they’ve been chosen by our client. This is usually done by email or a phone call. We tend to tell a model about their offered job as soon as a client tells us which model (s) they have chosen.

It’s then a model’s decision to accept the job. Most do, naturally, but others may decline because of unavailability or travel restrictions. That’s fine, and we always understand when a model turns down a booking. When a model accepts the job, we’ll pass them more details (client name, point of contact, job location, special requirements / specific clothing etc), and discuss their fee with them.

We’ll always been in touch with models prior to their job, as well as during and post-job. Our team are available at any time during office hours to assist in any way they can. Models are not alone on jobs – we know that support before, during and after a modelling shoot is vital for a model’s success.

It’s important to note that some bookings are done at the last minute, not through the lack of preparation, but more so because complications and cancellations can – and do – happen.

Don’t be disheartened if our clients haven’t selected your skills for a little while after registering with us. With the amount of clients and jobs on offer, it’ll only be a matter of time before you get recognised. In the meantime, keep the faith, and show us your current looks by way of new photos on your portfolio.

Firstly, we always respond to our models and would-be models, telling them that they WILL get paid.

This is in a marked difference to many of the so-called agencies who either expect you to work for nothing, claiming “this will give you valuable experience” or never actually getting around to paying you.

Yes, we hear about this happening time and time again…

How does that sound?

Well, now to the exact amount you are likely to be paid…

Well, this depends on a variety of different factors from how experienced a model is to the amount of time they will be required in front of the camera.

You may be taking part in a day’s shoot where you are needed for one hour or a five-day shoot where you are required for every shot.

Your role may be a simple walk-on part or much more acting may be required and there may be lines to say.

You may have to travel to the shoot (all expenses paid) or it may be right on your doorstep in your home town.

All these factors will be taken into account when we negotiate the fee with the client – and then you can decide whether you are prepared to carry out the assignment for that sum.

And summer is a distant memory.

But don’t let the winter blues stand in your way. The winter months are a phenomenal time to update your portfolio. Stunning backdrops and clear, unblemished skies are just two reasons to get outdoors and start snapping away. Plus – and this always needs reinforcing – clients always look for models who have taken the time to regularly enhance their portfolios with contemporary and updated reels and photos. It means that models care about being selected and don’t rest on their laurels. As our clients always choose which of our models they want for their assignments, winter is another perfect opportunity to let them see what you have to offer them.

We always look at a model’s portfolio if they tell us they haven’t been picked since applying with us after a few weeks. The modelling industry is competitive, so always looking for new ways to stand out is imperative. It’s not surprising that some models don’t get selected because they haven’t been keeping their portfolio fresh – just uploading a handful of shots won’t cut it. Models must keep their portfolios ticking over with a variety of snaps and poses. Persistence often pays off.

And wintery shots can spark a revival in a model’s stagnant portfolio. Just as we pray for sunshine in summer, many of us cross fingers for a blast of pure, powdery snow.

Snow needn’t been the definitive theme for spectacular and effective portfolio images. Winter is an atmospheric season. There are wonderful photos to be taken and reels to made by using dramatic winter scenery not often seen throughout the year. Use the wintery setting to your advantage.

Frozen lakes and snow-capped hills will give your shoots a feeling of magnitude. Sure, you should always be the focus of the photo or reel, but an impressive backdrop can improve the wow factor.

We have plenty of Christmas assignments – well, it is the busiest time of the year for most of our clients. Retailers will be looking for new modelling talent to help them sell more products to customers. Some will be on the hunt for models who look perfect in woolly jumpers and hats; others will favour more cheeky models posing in Santa hats and boots. Some want household pets to be featured in their Christmas campaigns. Whatever angle you want to go with, there’s no point staying indoors. Get out there and see how the winter months can assist your portfolio pictures.

Remember, too, that many of our clients come to us well in advance of Christmas. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to update portfolio photos a few weeks before the festive period. That’s not to say that January and February is a quite period for us; the two months aren’t as busy as December, but we’re a 365 day-a-year agency, so we have a lot more jobs than you might think in the New Year.

Winter, we salute you!

Models Direct sent some of its child models off to Woodside Library in Glasgow to take part in a photo shoot for the Scottish Libraries and Information Council.

And little Owen and Dia were right on the page when they posed with books inside the library to help encourage other youngsters to spend time reading.

Child models are always in high demand and we have all sorts of clients who require youngsters for their campaigns and promotions in Glasgow and across Scotland.

They come to us with their requirements, we find a selection of child models to meet those requirements and then our clients make the final choice.

These assignments could range from jobs like this one that Owen and Dia took part in to others where children model clothes, play with toys or appear as part of a happy family.

And if they’re happy to go ahead and be part of an interesting adventure meeting new people, fellow models and clients, then here are some top tips on how to help them navigate through the project successfully making it a positive and memorable experience, and hopefully making friends along the way!

Introduce yourself

Nerves can be heightened particularly when meeting new people so a great way to break the ice is to introduce yourself. This doesn’t need to be formal like how you would when interviewed because you’ve already been selected for the modelling job but clear and respectful communication is a great start.

[Respect] Personal space

When you’re working as a model, you might have to pose closely so be mindful of personal space. If physical interaction is involved, all parties will be informed during the briefing so if your fellow models do not consent then let our team know as we may need to select another model. Don’t worry though, this will not reduce your chances of being selected for future assignments.

Exude professionalism

It’s important that you arrive on time and maintain a cooperative and positive outlook to working on set, be this by yourself or with other models.

Offer help

Remember that as a group, you’re in the assignment together so be supportive and encouraging. This will help build trust and rapport between you and the new people you’re working with.

Express gratitude

It’s always nice to say good words of thanks. So don’t forget to express your appreciation to your client, production team and the models you’ve worked with.

Working with others allows you to learn new skills, create a positive lasting impression, network and who knows, even make friends along the journey!
