We really love seeing ads for haircare and gadgets that will make our favourite hairstyles easier to create and maintain. Whether this is on TV, at a bus stop or in a magazine, hair really is the crown you never take off. Therefore, investing in a healthy lifestyle and good quality products to maintain your luscious locks is well worth it because once your hair has given up, that’s it. Each strand is gold dust so look after it. With hair models to demonstrate different products and services, styles and colours, Models Direct thought it’d be a good idea to focus on this category.

Hair modelling is quite something – it’s a field in the industry that gets regular attention and requests. From live events, promotional work, photoshoots and TV work, being a hair model is a career that anyone can do who has well-conditioned on-trend hairstyles. On the other hand, clients on the lookout for hair models may also request for people who don’t fall into the typical category of to-die-for hair. It depends on what their specifications are which broadens a prospective model’s chances of being booked. It does take time though; nothing is instantaneous so being patient but persistent when uploading fresh images is the key.

Trying your hand (we mean “hair”) at something new

Experimenting with your hair can bring out your creative and fun side whilst being quite liberating! With so many colours and cuts to choose from, a change of hairstyle and/or colour can: alter your entire look, extenuate your features and demonstrate your passion to keep up with on-trend styles for an instant transformation. You might take your inspiration from social media influencers, film stars, singers or celebrities. Whoever your icon is, past or present, there are many styles and colours that you can experiment with.

Right now, we are seeing a surge of various styles and different lengths – beach waves, blunt bob cut, E-girl hairstyle (inspired from a TikTok trend earlier this year where soft pastels or bold colours are used at the front of the hair – I’m thinking of the YouTube ASMR sensation) and for the guys: low, mid, high fades, undercuts, French crop and crew cut to name a few.

Colours trending such as glossy honey, dusky tawny, stardust, metallic copper, brown and blonde balayage, silvers, neon ombre and punk pink are making their way through the hair, funking it up for a blast or blitz of colour.

Switch up your look

If you’ve liked what you’ve read and are considering this field of modelling, be prepared to switch up your look according to what the project entails. This might mean that your hair will be styled, quite possibly cut and coloured too. If this is a requirement, you will of course be asked for permission to go ahead. However, if you aren’t so keen then the beauty of this industry is that you have the opportunity to turn down an assignment if you wish. On the other hand, if you’re happy to move forward and get the ball rolling then you can expect for your hair to feature in hair product commercials, for demonstrations at fashion shows, and within the hairdressing sector. The possibilities are vast!

Try something new with your hair and if you want to try out a career as a hair model, then head on over to our application form.

Could you be a hair model? Follow our top haircare tips https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/could-you-be-a-hair-model-follow-our-top-haircare-tips/ https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/could-you-be-a-hair-model-follow-our-top-haircare-tips/#comments Thu, 22 Sep 2022 09:46:00 +0000 https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/?p=2237 We all have bad hair days, but you might be one of those people who also knows their locks can look amazing when cared for properly.

Perhaps you have magnificent hair that is a striking, standout feature and makes a real statement wherever you go and whatever you are doing.

Or maybe you have a gorgeous, shiny mane that looks glossy and beautiful, whether it is tied up or down – and however it is styled.

If so, then why not consider hair modelling?

Hair modelling is big business these days because hair products are big business and the haircare industry is continually developing new products it wants to encourage us to buy.

So, what should you be doing to look after your hair this spring season?

Here are our top tips:

1. Book a trim

Many of us may well have let our hair run a little rampant over the summer. Well, perhaps now is the time to have a little tidy up and to get rid of the dead ends. Book an appointment with your favourite hairdresser and come out feeling brand new.

2. Treat your hair

Central heating indoors can now start leaving hair dry and thirsty. Treat your locks to some heavy moisturising and deep conditioning. Coconut oil can provide a great deep treatment and there are other natural hair foods and products that could pep your tresses up. Otherwise, do your research and find a mask, oil or conditioner from a well-known producer that suits your hair type and will help lift your locks.

3. Plan a haircare regime

New beginnings – new haircare regime. Spring is the time many of us start afresh and make new plans for the future – and why not do that for your hair too? Pledge to try to wash it less, which is essential if you don’t want the natural oils to be stripped out, and opt to blow dry it, straighten it or curl it less if at all possible. All these styling techniques can be damaging. Dying or bleaching your hair too much can also be detrimental to healthy hare. Think about whether you give your hair longer to recover between these drastic treatments – and also take some advice from your professional stylist.

4. Consider a whole new look

Perhaps you’ve been mulling over trying something a little different. Well, spring is a great time to do this. As we emerge from winter and start to celebrate new beginnings, why not be brave and try that dramatic change. You might opt for a whole new style or a complete colour change. After all, if you hate it, your hair should have grown out or faded enough by the summer to try something a little different. Do remember, however, that if you are one of our models, we need you to update your e-portfolio and show us some images of your stunning new look.

Mint Condition https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/mint-condition/ Thu, 18 Jun 2020 10:07:06 +0000 https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/?p=1442 Is your hair feeling the effects of lockdown? Without the luxury of visits to our local hair salons your hair may have taken on a new life of it’s own..

Dry ends, frizz, faded colour – we’re all suffering and have taken to look for magical hair conditioners available on the market to try save our luscious locks. Most brands available to us are effective to maintain healthy, glossy hair, but have you ever wondered about the science behind the product?

In this blog, Models Direct takes a brief look at the ingredients that make your hair really stand out.

With numerous brands out there, the ingredients will vary, although the basic science behind the magic of conditioners is the same. About 90% of most – if not all – conditioners is water (“Aqua”) and this applies to shampoos. Below are some of the five most common ingredients found in hair conditioners:

1. Emollients (fatty, moisturising alcohols). These really come into play to soften hair and keep it “bouncy”. A good example of an emollient is cetearyl alcohol, which acts a waxy water barrier. It’s therefore great to prevent hair from getting tangled.

2. Quaternary ammoniums cations (“quats”). These compounds have a positive charge and bind to negatively-charged hair, reducing static. Sounds simple enough, although judging by Einstein’s trademark hair, he probably didn’t use conditioners!

3. Preservatives. There are loads of compounds and chemicals that are in this class, and their function is that of protection against microorganisms.

4. Hydrolysed proteins. These generate a film to increase moisturisation, and thus are great for dry hair. Some examples are soy,

5. Humectants. These are substances described as “hygroscopic” – meaning they absorb moisture. So, humectants like olive oil, Panthenol* (a variety of vitamin B5) and glycerol preserve hair moisture and can attract moisture to hair – hence they are beneficial for more making hair more pliable and, ultimately, more manageable.

* The super-brand Pantene derived its name from this ingredient.

In simple terms, conditioners offer a repair job – think of them as your very own MOT for your hair. A lot of the laws of chemistry and physics are based on “opposites attract”. This is true of hair conditioners. Flakes of hair overlap to form a cuticle layer that protects the inner strands of hair. When light reflects off the cuticle layer, it produces your hair’s natural shine  – and when hair is frizzy, it basically means that the cuticle layer is being eroded, a bit like frayed rope. In slightly more detail, the cationic charge (always a positive charge) binds with the negative charge on the hair strand. This bind – or attraction – is strong enough to envelop the strand, in effect enclosing the strand in a protective case. Cuticle flakes are then packed tightly together, thus resulting in smoother hair. The emollients will help your hair feel soft even after a rinse.

Products that combine shampoo and conditioner are standard nowadays, as they are more convenient than two separate products (and are cheaper). However, using a separate conditioner is more effective for glorious hair free from tangles.

So the next time you have a shower, think about the basic chemistry rule of “opposites attract.” It’ll hopefully hold you in good stead before your next modelling shoot – and when someone pays you a compliment, you can educate them on the science behind your bouncy locks!
