Plus size modelling – Models Direct https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk Models Direct modelling agency has been bringing models and clients together since 1990. Welcome to the Models Direct business blog. Therefore, if you are a woman of a dress size 14 or above or a man with a chest larger than 42ins and a waist larger than 34ins, you could potentially become a plus-size model.

However, it does also depend on your height and general build.

If you think you may be suitable for plus-size modelling, the best step is to fill in our form, send us a photograph and wait for us to be in touch.

Once we have all your statistics and information, as well as an idea of your body shape, we can offer you individual advice on how to proceed.

Plus-size modelling has really taken off in recent times.

The fashion industry has not only realised just how essential it is to cater for customers of all shapes and sizes, but the world of advertising has become aware of the importance of reflecting real people.

This means that there are now far more ranges of clothing aimed at those of above average sizes and that those conducting photo and film shoots often request curvy and plus-size models.

And, of course, this all comes as the world in general is edging towards a better understanding that we should all be celabrated for who we are.

Models Direct has always been about body positivity.

We love our models to be of all shapes, sizes, ages, backgrounds and abilities.

Our clients frequently come to us requesting everyday models and we have plus-size models who have been on our books for years.

Among them is Neri – here she explains more about her experience of working with us:

“This journey has been amazing so far, with my agent Molly having my back the whole time and encouraging my curvy self to push forward…

“Whatever happens, taking a chance on myself, was the best thing I did and Models Direct taking a chance on me, has been life changing.”

Neri continues:

“I’ve worked with Models Direct since 2018 and I’ve always had great experiences with my bookings.

“I had another live TV show with Ideal World, modelling a different product and it was a lovely experience.

“The staff there are always so helpful and it’s so nice to go back somewhere, where they know your face.

“Thank you Charlie – always a superstar and the best agent ever!”

If you think you might be suitable for plus-size modelling, don’t hold back!

Get in contact with us and we can discuss it with you in more detail.

The Plus-Size Revolution https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/the-plus-size-revolution/ Tue, 09 Jul 2024 08:12:00 +0000 https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/?p=3795 Models Direct is proud to be part of the growing movement we’ve seen transform over time which is advocating for greater representation of people. The shift is a long-awaited one which we’ve been eagerly anticipating and we’re seeing more plus-size modelling.

Seeing people in the fashion world, social media platforms, TV, the big screen and as part of our wider society being put forward rather than placed back, is a positive change that’s had a lot of hard work dedicated to its cause.

Nevertheless, it hasn’t been easy. The plus size revolution has had its ups and downs, and as always, there are critical opinions still floating out there, stereotypes and prejudice which even though every part of the movement would like to remove, it’s not entirely possible.

However, we’re all still trying our best to continue to challenge the traditional beauty standards (size zero, super tall, chiselled features, not an inch of fat to be seen), and promote a healthier outlook to body positivity by accepting the diverse looks our population is proud to showcase.

What’s also tremendously helped elevate the trend is famous faces speaking out, campaigning and celebrating body diversity.

Take a look at some of these courageous ladies who are all about speaking their minds and not being afraid of standing up for their views.

Lizzo

The “Good as Hell” and “Truth Hurts,” singer, rapper, and actress has spoken openly about self-love and how she views her body throughout her career. With her reality TV show “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls,” (2022) searching for backup dancers, and her shapewear collection, “Yitty,” designed for all body shapes released in 2022 she has said:

“I made the decision that I just wanted to be happy with my body and happy with who I am. You have to find that love for yourself deep down inside, underneath all of the questioning and iciness.”

Chrissy Metz

“Our bodies don’t define us—they just happen to be our vessels.”

If you haven’t seen the American comedy series “This is Us’ then you’ve missed out on a great asset to the body acceptance conversation. Actress Chrissy Metz has spoken about her own struggles with her body weight and how she sees herself, often talking about her childhood and weight journey.

Tess Holliday
Gorgeous plus-size model, author and activist, Tess Holliday was scouted by plus-size fashion brand Torrid. At first, she thought it was a scam but the next thing she knew, she was up on the billboards. This was just the beginning of Tess’s modelling journey.

She created a storm by sending out Instagram pics going against beauty norms and opening the conversation about how women can wear whatever they want regardless of their shape and size.

Tess has explained:

“Be yourself at any cost. Don’t make any apologies…Because you are great just as you are and if people don’t believe it, then you show them.”

Other notable figures include model/presenter Ashley Graham, actress Danielle Brooks, singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor and models Robyn Lawley, Paloma Elsesser and Denise Bidot.

Well, guys, we stand by you and have plus-size male and female models here at MD. We’ve always been happy to support and celebrate all body shapes and sizes, and moving forward we’ll continue to be part of this amazing initiative.

Access All Areas: Plus Size Models are Slaying It https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/access-all-areas-plus-size-models-are-slaying-it/ Wed, 07 Feb 2024 08:36:00 +0000 https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/?p=3352 not just down the runway for a moment to shine, but more a permanent fixture across all areas of the modelling and fashion industry. Welcome to the plus-size revolution in imaging and production.

Curve, plus-size or size-inclusive?

Whether they’re called curve models, plus-size models or size-inclusive models, this segment of the population deserves to be stylish and have access to collections just like other sizes do. As for which size is defined as plus-size, many companies do their take.

There’s been great strides in this part of the industry and out of all the fashion weeks, London has taken the top spot on the leader board where it’s been the most embracing towards size inclusivity. Okay, we know it’s not much but in this capital, 7% of models slaying the runway were plus-size or mid-size. Rather than looking at the percentage being minuscule, we’re focusing on the positives as is the body positivity revolution.

Brands taking plus-size to new heights

Yes, there’s still a long way to go on this journey of recognition and embracement but we’re travelling through already. Thanks to high street, premium and luxury fashion powerhouses such as Next, Karen Millen and Erdem, the footprints have already been embedded.

Vintage-inspired British womenswear brand Rixo drops new collections every month and has an “extended sizing” section dedicated to all sizes up to UK size 26.

Universal Standard (US) is another brand harnessing size inclusivity throughout their collections with staple fashion statements and a brilliant ethos of bringing fashion to everyone.

Fun fact: US collabed with Erdem in 2021 and a year before, published a children’s book titled What Would Fashion Look Like if it Included All of Us? to break down stereotypes and bring us all closer to clothing that suits our bodies.

Models Direct’s outlook

Over thirty years later, our philosophy has stayed the same – we embrace everyone, and we mean it – ev-er-y-one! This means whatever dress size you are, you’ll be in our MD books without any issue. We’re proud to support the body positivity movement and changes in the fashion and modelling world that are inclusive for all.

Plus Size Modelling https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/plus-size-modelling-2/ Fri, 24 Feb 2023 08:30:00 +0000 https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/?p=2491 Hello hello, we’re glad you’re reading this page! Models Direct is hoping that you didn’t just accidentally stumble across this page with no vision of finding out more about plus size modelling. With that being said, sometimes accidental discoveries can be the most life-changing. If your research is intentional and you’re eager to learn more, please continue scrolling.

Models Direct is all about embracing everyone. We work on not just making waves but tsunamis in our modelling world because the fact is, we want to make a positive long lasting difference.

We come in all shapes and sizes from different parts of the world, with different cultures, traditions, and languages. We don’t fit into a one-size-fits-all category, we’re unique and fascinating. Why should the modelling industry constrict beautiful characteristics and features so that models conform? This is where we want to inject that positivity and change.

Models Direct is extremely proud that we have been part of breaking the modelling barriers since we first set up our agency thirty years back. Plus size modelling is a tremendous asset to our business and we’ve been part of the revolutionary even before it was a thing.

As part of our FAQ hub we are presenting four of the most common questions we are often asked revolving this niche. We hope that you find this helpful, and if you have any further questions, our MD team are always happy to answer. Let’s go!

How do you get to be a plus size model?

If you’re interested in entering this industry, it doesn’t have to be a challenge or out of your league. You’ll need a reputable agency who can support your vision, goals and aspirations. Who can you turn to? Models Direct, that’s who! We’re here and we can help you break into the industry no matter what your age is, your size, and even your level of experience.

How much do plus size models make?

Great question! Plus size models can earn a good amount of money depending on who they are working with, the duration and the location of the project. Some assignments might mean a couple of hours worth of work for under £100 whilst others could mean a large sum of money going into the thousands! Head on over to our page which displays how much our Models Direct models have earned to see for yourself.

Is it hard to be a plus size model?

With everything in life, you have to work hard to achieve a goal. In this case, if your goal is to be a plus size model then you have to invest time in creating your portfolio and following up with assignments. If you’re with the right agency that values you and wants to put you forward whenever a client requests for your look, then this reduces the level of difficulty in becoming a successful model of this growing niche.

Can you be a model if you’re overweight?

This question was one we contemplated on whether to include in our list of FAQs but because it’s been asked so so many times, we only think it’s right to answer it.

Having a plus size division in the modelling industry means that people of all shapes and sizes are being embraced for who they are and not what they should look like. If your dress size is above 14 then you’ll fall within this niche where you’ll find work because clients are frequently calling for fuller, voluptuous models. Times have changed and clients are following the trends and where the movement of ideas and thoughts are flowing. We’re not leaving plus size modelling behind, we’re pushing it forward so if you’re interested in joining us, reach out and we’ll connect with you.

Weight and modelling https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/weight-and-modelling/ Wed, 07 Dec 2022 12:14:16 +0000 https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/?p=2316 Who says you can’t be successful at modelling with a fuller figure? Certainly not us, and not anyone with an ounce of knowledge of how the commercial modelling industry works. And definitely not the hundreds of happy models that refuse to accept models need to be “size zero” to shine in front of the camera.

There’s nothing wrong with improving any aspect of your life. This could be general health, which we see particularly in the early months of the year after a heavy festive period (“heavy” on our bodies, sleep patterns and our wallets!). Improvements can be made in our careers or to our family life – for example, by trying to focus on spending more quality time with our partners and children. Adjusting and making tweaks to our life is natural for all-round happiness, but that doesn’t mean losing weight is the “be-all and end-all”. Self-confidence is crucial to overall wellbeing, and embracing our figures is far more beneficial in the long run than short-term fads.

We’ve been flying the flag for “plus size” models breaking barriers and raising awareness in the process. As prominent advocators of diversity, we don’t succumb to the myths or pressures of all models looking the same. There are three main reasons for this, namely:

1. We put all our model’s health at the top of list of priorities – be it mental health or physical wellbeing. And if that means a model is content in their looks, it’s irrelevant what their size is.

2. The “zero size” idiom is largely immaterial. If such a phrase is still being used, we’ll leave it on the catwalk, thank you very much. We’re interested in talented individuals succeeding in real modelling jobs, not models working for large fashion houses!

3. Because we supply models to the most varied clients around, we know that models of all sizes and shapes are big business. This is especially true of models that represent the vast majority of the population, which is why a “typical” physical figure is key to a lot of our client’s advertising campaigns.

If you’d like to “add more weight” to the case of even more models being in the spotlight of commercial modelling, check out this

The more the merrier! The more models with fuller bodies we have on our books, the more the message will continue to spread that big is not only beautiful – it’s natural, too!

We need our database of models to mirror the shift in society’s expectations. We also look at each and every person who expresses an interest in being a Models Direct model. Our diligent team of agency professionals have a keen eye for industry talent, so send in your photos and have the confidence to show off your looks to us.

Curves trump wiry waists every time, and all the major clothing labels have now embraced the 21st century by recognising the fact. Come and join the party, and let’s celebrate the anti-size zero revolution!

Plus size modelling https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/plus-size-modelling/ Fri, 07 Oct 2022 07:51:00 +0000 https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/?p=2157 We love plus size models.
We’ve been shouting from the rooftops for some time about the pros of plus size modelling – and the feedback from everyone has been outstanding…but not surprising.

“Plus size” modelling is a common term used in the commercial modelling fraternity, although a few years ago it was largely obscure. Now, the world has moved on even more, because many of us classify the phrase as really being “average size”.

There’s a reason for this, and it shouldn’t take a scientist to explain it. We’ll use females as the example.

Plus size female models tend to be size 12-18. OK so far. But, 60 years ago, the average British woman was size 12. In the 21st century, it’s size 16. So, it’s totally understandable to think of “plus size” as “average size”.

Additionally, the average modern British woman consumes 500 calories more than their 1950s counterparts, as well as being just over one stone heavier and three inches taller. And when they get the urge to go shoe shopping? The 21st century UK woman has double the shoe size than women in the 1950s. See? The penchant for female “plus size” modelling is a natural development when you consider the above statistics.

The increase in popularity for “plus size” models is largely down to brands appealing to a good number of the population – which is their customers. Why wouldn’t they want to attract the majority of the consumers? It’s not as if the retail head honchos sit in board meetings scratching their heads! It’s obvious! This has been undeniably reflected by an increase in sizes of dresses and other clothes, as well as specific curve sections in both high street and online commerce. The impact on models? We need more of them! And your next step in taking part in exciting “plus size” modelling assignments is a couple of minutes away! Simply apply to register with Models Direct. We have many happy “plus size” models making money in fun assignments, but we want more!

And what about the males? We need them, too – it’s as simple as that! Yes, it’s true that male “plus size” models are not as prevalent as the ladies, but that’s not to declare them unimportant by any means. Being at ease with your body is a massive benefit, and we want everyone on our books to be just as contented in front of a camera as they are at home. Men – why not join us? You could soon be put forward to our renowned clients and start making strides in the commercial modelling industry.

Males with just a fuller figure aren’t only classed as “plus size”. There are opportunities for chaps with wider shoulders or above a certain height.

We can’t stress enough that there are modelling jobs for just about anybody! And they are all in a regulated, safe and fun environment. Check out our heaps of reviews from real people just like you:

Plus size modelling is a definite plus for everyone concerned: our models, the industry, our clients and all manner of commerce. If you have real hopes of starring in advertising and promotional modelling assignments, let Models Direct be your best way to find success!

What is considered as ‘Plus Size’ in the industry now? https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/what-is-considered-as-plus-size-in-the-industry-now/ Tue, 07 Jun 2022 17:51:59 +0000 https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/?p=2018 Did you know that the term plus-size was first found in an ad for Lane Bryant in the late 1920s? No? Neither did we! It was until the 1940s-50s that it started to stick and stay in the domain as new terminology for body size. Fast forward to 2022 and we’re certain most of you reading this have heard of it. It’s made a big impact in the fashion and beauty world whether that’s been across social media, beauty mags or other mediums.

A couple of years back we did a blog about the plus-size revolution but we’re curious to revisit this modelling category and see how things may have changed, if anything, since then. Does the industry still use the term plus size? How is it viewed now? Are we still size-inclusive? Let’s explore more here…

What’s it shaping up like out there?

Models Direct have been scouring through the trails of the world wide web to investigate, and here’s a quick snapshot of what different clothing retailers kick-start their sizing range from and more interestingly what they refer as to their plus-size category:

ASOS begin at size 18, sticking to their roots: plus size and curve

Shein starts at size 16 and just has theirs down as plus

Boohoo’s sizing is at 16 with plus too

Yours are size 14 under as plus

It seems that out of plus-size the word size has been dropped but we’ve seen a similar pattern run through a lot of the industry, the terms are still very much the same so no real big change there. Is this surprising? No, probably not. It might just mean that most people are satisfied with the term and are happy to keep it on continuing their support for size inclusivity. Woohoo! This area of the industry is continuing to grow and develop with all the choices and options out there. So whether you’re a size 14 and onwards, fashionistas can keep up with the latest trends and current styles because they’ve been given the opportunity to continue to do so. Simples!

Conversations about size inclusivity

A few years back, conversing about size has helped to begin the process of debunking body shaming where conversations have sparked what beauty means to people and how it should be showcased, perceived and translated not just in the modelling and fashion world but in the community at large. This has helped break down barriers and push forward positive messages with more acceptance of the variety society has of body shapes and sizes…voila, here we are today!

We’ve got models that are camera present, in the spotlight and being called for assignments regardless of their size and we love it! Take Nadia Aboulhosn, Gabi Fresh, Darnel Ghramm, Tess Holliday, and Ashley Graham, who are just a few of the many influencers rocking up the scene and showing the world that beauty isn’t filtered through slender, tall bodies, it’s through all mediums.

A fresh outlook…always!

Our agency, Models Direct, thrives on what makes us different – this is what’s so wonderful about our way of thinking as a modelling agency. We look outside the box, give pride to how we operate as a business, and continually adapt and innovate according to the changes in our society. So when it comes to body positivity, curves, plus, plus-size, we’re all in.

What is Success to You? https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/what-is-success-to-you/ Fri, 18 Feb 2022 16:28:37 +0000 https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/?p=1944 They say the road to success can be tough – but for many the journey can be as much fun as getting there…

But everyone’s definition of success varies and before you start reaching for the stars, it might be worth deciding what yours is.

We all know the names of many successful models – those who appear in top fashion magazines, on catwalks and on our television screens.

But there are many, many more male, female and child models, who are also highly successful but about whom we know much less.

This is because they all have their own goals and – despite not necessarily having all the trappings of fame and fortune – they are extremely content in their work and in their work-life balance.

With modelling – as with any career or pastime – it is seriously worth thinking about what your goals might be.

Models Direct encourages all its models and would-be models to pause and mull over what they deem to be success.

And to ensure that while they aim high and set themselves challenges to aspire to, they also make sure they enjoy the ride!

Here are a few definitions of success you might like to consider:

Success is having a career or pastime I enjoy

Ask yourself what you want to be doing and how much you want to be doing it. If you are at school, studying or have another job you enjoy, then a little modelling work here and there may be perfect for you. Equally, perhaps you would like to build up to a full-time career in modelling, and eventually reaching that goal will be when you decide you have been successful.

Success is earning money

We all need money and sometimes becoming a model can bring in that little bit of extra income that makes all the difference. On the other hand, you might decide that you would eventually like all your income to come from a modelling career and that you will ultimately decide you are successful when you are able to earn a certain amount by doing a job you really enjoy.

Success is having my family and friends around me

For many of us, this really is the most important thing in life. We want to forge lasting friendships and to be part of a happy and loving family. This might mean having children of our own or enjoying strong relationships with our parents, grandparents and other relatives. Perhaps it means eventually being in a long-term relationship with a partner, husband or wife.

Success is being happy and healthy

This is one we should all also aspire to perhaps – after all, being happy and healthy are among the most important things in life. Maybe we should all take a step back from our busy lives to consider how healthy we are and what we can do to make ourselves heathier. And if we are on an ongoing push to the top, then we should also draw breath and assess our happiness. And, if we realise that we are actually unhappy in whatever we are doing, then perhaps we should decide to make some changes.

Success is being famous

Many people define success as being famous, but is achieving fame really the pinnacle of success? Think of everything you might lose, as well as gain, if you become famous: your privacy, perhaps, and the freedom to be yourself at all times? For some, however, fame is everything and certainly if that really is your top goal in life, then you have to start somewhere….

Behind the Scenes on a Modelling Shoot https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/behind-the-scenes-on-a-modelling-shoot/ Wed, 02 Feb 2022 12:59:51 +0000 https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/?p=1932 There’s nothing more exciting than taking part in your first ever modelling shoot but it is worth having an idea of what to expect before you go.

Models Direct ask their models to take their own snaps and to report back on their experiences so those who are attending an assignment for the very first time can find out more.

Read some of these model assignment reviews, have a look at photos and videos that have been posted and remember we are always happy to answer any questions you have before heading off.

In the meantime, here is a little glimpse behind the scenes:

Your arrival

Before heading off to your photo or film shoot, you will have been given all the details of where to go, when to arrive and what to bring with you. When you arrive, you may well be met but if not then report to the head of production, the director or whoever is in charge of the shoot. They are then likely to run through the day’s events with you; explaining what will take place and when you will be required.

On set

Photo and film shoots do vary from project to project. Some bookings may simply involve one photographer, while for others there may be a whole team of people, each with a different role. For some assignments, you may well be sent to wardrobe, hair and makeup. These professionals will show you what you will be wearing, help you to dress and make any necessary adjustments. They will also ensure your hair and makeup achieve the look required for the shoot. On every set, there will either be a stills photographer or film camera person. There may also be people dealing with sound, lighting, set design and props. The director is likely to oversee everything. All of these people are there to help you and guide you through the day. They understand you may not have done this before and will be happy to answer your questions.

Other people

It is highly likely other people will be milling about the set and the location too. There may be runners, who are there to assist everyone and make sure you have everything you need. If any children are involved, then their chaperones will be there. If animals are being used in the commercial or advertising campaign, then their professional handlers will also be around. There will be somewhere to sit and relax when you are not called upon and you may well meet other models in these places. We always advise our models to take a book or magazine, bottle of water and snacks with them, but you may find there is catering on your shoot. Remember to let them know if you have any special dietary requirements and don’t be afraid to grab a drink or something to eat from them. Modelling can be hard work – and you will need to keep your energy up!

Modelling Trends for the Year Ahead https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/modelling-trends-for-the-year-ahead/ Fri, 21 Jan 2022 14:46:09 +0000 https://www.modelsdirect.org.uk/?p=1925 The pandemic disrupted almost all industries, some more than others. As we’re recovering from a challenging period that will be making it into history books, we’ll take a look at the shift in modelling trends set to shape the year ahead…

1. Clothing reboot

Since we were indoors for nearly two years – can you believe it? – loungewear and sportswear were our go-to clothing preferences for our dramatically changing world. We were stuck inside so there wasn’t a need to dress up or even wear casual clothes since we were only navigating through our gardens, kitchens, home offices and eventually outdoor recreational activities.

Now, according to The Business of Fashion, 37% of fashion executives expect us to be drawn to occasion wear which is predicted to be within the top-three of our preferred clothing categories.

Occasion dresses and workwear are rebounding swiftly as we’re adjusting to a new lifestyle where restrictions are lifting. Models can expect to be wearing these types of clothing in 2022 on the runway or for commercial modelling projects.

2. Investing in recycling

Sustainability is a hot topic we’ve all got our eyes on and with the recent COP26 which was held a few weeks back, we’re actively looking at ways to reduce our environmental footprint and the long term impact it will have on our earth.

One route the fashion world is taking is to leverage closed-loop recycling. According to The Business of Fashion, 60% of fashion executives have already taken steps to invest in this methodology or are planning to. This is where textile product waste is recycled into new textile products making this a valuable strategy that is set to take 2022 by storm in alliance with the sustainable outlook.

3. Changing user experience through social shopping

Innovative ways of presenting fashion will bring value to users’ experience through convenience and access to technology. 2022 is forecasted to explore more ways of engaging virtual fashion, from live streaming to augmented reality try-on boosting the social shopping realm. This will change how people will view and engage with fashion, even during troubling times.

We were sitting indoors scrolling through our feeds for the most part and now 70% would be inclined to shop on social media for clothing. We’re learnt that technology has been a great asset to the world during the pandemic that it’s set to continue connecting people, establishing and building new relationships.

4. Increase in modelling divisions

Our agency, Models Direct, are predicting that new modelling divisions will launch next year. What could they be? Only time will tell but over the years we’ve seen a shift in change – plus-size and models with special abilities have been recently added to our categories. So, we think we’re in for some interesting changes where more models will be called and we can’t wait to see what’s in store.

The takeaway

Many predictions have been forecasted for 2022 but Models Direct have explored what’s set to happen in the world of fashion and modelling. It looks positive and busy, and we’re sure our models will have a great time being part of the modelling revolution that is in store next year.

If you’re not part of our agency, please join us – we’d love to hear from you and be part of our predicted trends for 2022!
